Search engines use automated programs called spiders or bots. These spiders or bots crawl all over the hyperlinks in a website. Most websites make it easy for spiders and bots to crawl over their website by having a sitemap which is link an index of all the web pages of a website.
Once a spider crawls over a website or web page, the contents of the website or web page has to be indexed. This is nothing but storing the contents in a giant database. A search engine does the indexing is a fraction of second given the size of the World Wide Web.
So when a searcher types a search term in a search engine, the search engine retrieves all documents with the matching search term from its index and displays it for the searcher.
Once the search engine figures out which are the most relevant match to a searcher’s query, it uses a complicated mathematical equation to determine which website or web page is the most relevant for a particular search term and it is displayed with the most relevant website or web page being in the front and the least relevant at the back. This is the reason why websites and web pages are constantly endeavoring to be in the front so that searchers click on their URL and visit their website or web page.
